Alderweireld was on Manchester United’s radar over the summer as Jose Mourinho sought to add an established centre-back to his ranks.
However, Mourinho was left frustrated as he missed out on the Belgian, while he also saw a move for Leicester star Harry Maguire fall through with the England international putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal with the Foxes last month.
As far as Bailly is concerned, the Ivory Coast international has struggled to convince Mourinho of his abilities this term.
Although he has started five Premier League games, he was substituted after just 20 minutes of the 3-2 victory against Newcastle last Saturday and he was replaced by Juan Mata.
According to the Daily Star, United will look to recoup as much of the £30million they spent to bring him to the Premier League from Villarreal in 2016.
The report suggests Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of Bailly and that Mourinho could even use the player as bait to persuade Alderweireld to join.
United and Tottenham have had some bad blood when it comes to dealings in the transfer market.
It is also believed that Arsenal are tracking Bailly’s situation.
Unai Emery knows Bailly well having been on opposing sides when he managed Valencia.
Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand suggested last weekend that he’s not sure if he sees a way back for Bailly at Old Trafford.
“I feel sorry for Scott McTominay – he’s a central midfielder being forced to play centre half,” Ferdinand said.
“And this guy… I don’t see a way back for Bailly.
“He was dragged off – the manager stated the last game he doesn’t have defenders who can play the ball out from the back and he’s been made the fall guy here.”
United travel to face Chelsea a week on Saturday (12.30pm) in their first game after the international break.
