La Liga table LATEST standings: Barcelona one point off the top, Real Madrid in fourth | Football | Sport

The La Liga standings have taken an interesting twist going into the international break, with a new contender breaking into the usual suspects at the top.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have been left trailing behind Sevilla who have stormed to the top spot after racking up five wins in eight games.

Los Rojiblancos produced a memorable display earlier in the season to destroy Real Madrid in a 3-0 rout, and have won their last four in a row.

It remains to be seen whether Wissam Ben Yedder and Andre Silva can maintain their destructive form to keep Sevilla in the hunt for an unlikely title.

Real Madrid appeared to have settled into the season nicely following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in the summer.

Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema started the season in inspired form but have tailed off, with the former currently sidelined through injury.

Lionel Messi has recorded 11 goals and five assists across all competitions in his 11 appearances this season, and will be desperate to haul Barcelona back to the top.

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has produced four goals and as many assists in La Liga so far with the title race set to be closer than ever before.

La Liga news

Real Madrid have not won or scored a goal in their last four games, meaning Julen Lopetegui’s position is reportedly on the rocks already.

The former Spain manager was infamously sacked from the national team the day before the 2018 World Cup after agreeing to take over at the Bernabeu without consulting the Spanish FA.

Barcelona have been linked with a shock move for Liverpool flop Alberto Moreno with Jordi Alba tipped to join Manchester United.

Elsewhere, Saul Niguez has committed his future to Atletico Madrid, saying he wants to retire at the club, despite interest from Barcelona.
