Fans horrfied by Gunn’s abrupt exit from the Guardians franchise will be overjoyed that he has plenty of new material on the way. First up is a chilling and sharp reboot of all the superhero tropes. Brightburn tells the familiar story of a baby sent to Earth and adopted by childless parents. They love him even as his strange powers start to emerge. So far, so familiar. But what if the story took a much darker turn? What if the child doesn’t want to use his terrifying powers for good? Superman just got super-scary.
The trailer packs quite a punch and finishes with a classic horror movie jump-scare. Superheroes remain the kings of the blockbusters but horror movies have had a huge surge in the past few years and this film looks like it has it all.
It also has an impressive pedigree. Gunn has produced the film with his brother Brian and cousin Mark writing the script.
Elizabeth Banks stars as the devoted but increasingly disturbed mother Mrs Breyer.
Brightburn is out in the UK on May 24, 2019
